Catalytic oxidation of methane to methyl hydroperoxide and other oxygenates under mild conditions

Methane is oxidized by air in acetonitrile solution to give methyl hydroperoxide (easily reduced to methanol), formaldehyde and formic acid in the presence of [NBu]VO–pyrazine-2-carboxylic acid as the catalyst and HO as a promoter.
